PRESIDENT’S REPORT

The first month of the Winter Season is almost at an end but how great to see the rinks being almost to capacity except Fridays, why Fridays I ask, I do not know the answer other than we need to have an input of ideas i.e. competitions, Outdoor Clubs invited to fill these spaces.  The brunch last Friday was a success and some members voiced that perhaps two per month could be considered.  This, of course, will be looked at

The Indoor carpet has been cleaned and stretched but it has been disappointing to observe that chocolate has been dropped onto it with a kitkat wrapper found in the bin at the far end of the green!!!  Crisp crumbs have also had to be cleared up.  Food of any description must not be consumed on the Green please.  Thankyou.

Replacement Computers are to be installed in the upstairs office keeping us up to date with new technologies coming into the computer world for banking and other services we will have to be in touch with and up to date with.  These will be installed in-house.

November comes and November goes,
With the last red berries and the first white snow

With night coming early and dawn coming late
And ice in the bucket and frost on the gate

The first burn and the kettles sing
And earth sinks to rest, until next spring…

The flat is now completely refurbished and will be

occupied in the very near future.  Tenants references are awaited and there is more than one interested party which is to the good.

As the Nationals are now out of the starting blocks I would like to wish you all the best of luck.

Ladies Indoor Competitions

Entry forms for these competitions are available on the competitions noticeboard in both the Ladies Locker Room and in the Bowls Hall.

Completed forms should be put in the Competitions box outside the Indoor office.

The competitions cannot go ahead without entries, so ladies please do try to enter at least one of the competitions.

MAKE YOURSELF AVAILABLE YOU DON’T KNOW WHAT YOU ARE MISSING!!!

Ladies Outdoor Committee

We held our AGM on 14 October.

We played 14 ladies matches: 9 in the Croydon and District League (C&DL) and 5 friendlies. Once again, we had a real mix of weather with which to contend during the season, with the ladies playing through some rainy and some very hot weather. We fulfilled all the fixtures (though the friendlies, which would have gone alongside the C&DL matches with Caterham and Purley Bury, were cancelled again this year).

Croydon won 5 and lost 4 of the C&DL matches, with some very close results both ways. At one stage, top of the league, Croydon finished in 5th place, but only 6 points behind the eventual winners, Caterham; the top of the league was keenly contested this year. We had mixed results in the ladies’ friendlies but we won more than we lost, which is always good!

The ladies took part in the mixed friendlies as well as in the Vilamoura (mixed triples) League – Croydon entered for the first time and won the trophy and shield by one point – well done to everyone.

Thanks again to all members who contributed throughout the summer. Enjoy the indoor season; we look forward to welcoming you back to the summer next year.

10 End Pairs Challenge

This new competition was held during the October Open Day. It was set up as a Pairs Challenge over 10 ends, with the nearest 5 woods to the Jack scoring each time, giving a possible 15 points available on every end. When all entrants have completed their 10 ends, the pair achieving the highest score would be the winners.

8 pairs entered the Challenge with Marie Holland and Shirley White winning the Ladies competition, scoring 93 points and Amar Nachimuthu and Barry Swannie winning the Mens competition with 87 points.
Congratulations to all.

Sue Lammas
Ladies Competition Secretary

Vilamoura Mixed Triples Challenge

This bowls ‘league’, originally sponsored by ‘Vilamoura Bowls Holidays’ in the Algarve, Portugal, involves 12 clubs from our local area. “The competition is for ‘mixed’ teams i.e. to include at least 1 female or 1 male in each triple. Preference should be given to non-badged players but if necessary, 1 County badged player per triple will be allowed.” At the AGM, held on 19th October 2019, members voted to amend this rule for 2020 to read “if necessary, One County badged player per match i.e. home or away triple, will be allowed.” Matches take place Monday – Friday and both triples games are played simultaneously, one at home and one away. In 2019, Croydon BC applied to join the league and were successful in winning it by 1 point from Carshalton BC with Cheam finishing third. On Monday 16th September, presentation day was hosted by the Epsom Bowling Club that featured a triples ‘drive’ – ably organised by John Seymour – followed by afternoon tea.

John Seymour presents the winning trophy to Luke Griffin accompanied by Pat Bentley and Barry Swannie.

The Vilamoura Bowls Club was established in 1993 by Amadeu Gil da Rocha of Vilamoura Bowls Holidays. It hosted two championship grass greens (fourteen rinks in all) and has natural grass from Oregon State University, USA. Bowls England Chief Executive Tony Allcock OBE and Barry Swannie were invited to attend the opening.

Unfortunately, “the best bowls greens in the Algarve” closed on the 31st October 2016.

All Outdoor members are invited to play – so please look for the team sheets and come and join us next year.

Barry Swannie

Men’s Indoor

Well the indoor season is now into full swing, unfortunately we lost our first game of the season away to Arun but an enjoyable fixture irrespective of the result, and behalf of the section I would like to thank the member, who wishes to remain anonymous, who paid the vast majority of the coach cost. Our 2nd fixture was against the Surrey Patrons and our 3rd fixture was a league game against Old Coulsdon both of which we won.

This season some of the teams in the 2nd division of the men’s evening league did not wish to play by the same rules as the 1st Division this would have caused problems with relegation and promotion. We have now introduced a mixed triples league to replace the 2nd division, I am given to understand that they have 5 teams competing, but there are some player vacancies any interested contact Dave Jackman, who I thank for organising this new league.

The various other leagues are running well although already we have some cancellations. A new singles and pairs league will be running on a Friday evening with sponsored prize money of £650 interested members should contact Luke Griffin.
Finally it would make life so much easier for the captains if members would put their names down for matches without having to be asked this would negate the need for hours of phone calls trying to get a team. I would also like welcome all our new members and look forward to seeing your names down for our match fixtures.

Men’s Indoor Season News 2019/2020

Having asked the EIBA (English Indoor Bowling Association) for clarification on rink selection when in competitions this season (other than club comps) Claire Edson answered as follows below:

“Further to your email request I would advise that the rink played on for individual competitions is dictated on what the challenger books with their club. Therefore no drawing of rinks for individual competitions when at the club.”

i.e. all exactly the same as previous years. So no change to EIBA rules, if you are in Nationals, Surrey’s or L&SC all recognised competitions other than club internals as the challenger you can book a rink of your liking if you so desire.

OPEN DAY SUCCESS!!!!

Thanks to all of you who contributed to another fabulous Open Day. Rose, Chris, Monica, Dave, Barrie, John, Rosemary, Marion, Ruth and especially Sophie, in fact, everyone who came along and supported and enjoyed the day.

5,000 leaflets were distributed to local homes, but we seem to have most response from the posters put up in shops, libraries etc. by you!!!

We had 17 people who showed an interest in joining- a great result. Let’s hope we get a few new members. I am sure I don’t need to say, if you do see a new face around please talk to them and make them welcome. A number of “newbies” will be undertaking coaching with Jane, Rick, Sam and John Faulkner– thanks go to all the coaches for their ongoing assistance.

The Club was bustling, thanks to the addition of a Challenge match organised by Sue Lammas and the Book Fayre organised by John Hilton and his merry band of bookworms. Thanks to those of you who donated books as well – there certainly was a lot to choose from!

It is hard work getting these things together, but very satisfying to know you all enjoyed the great atmosphere and camaraderie.

Mixed Drive and Brunch

The first mixed drive and Brunch on the 18th October was a great success and enjoyed by all. 29 bowlers drew teams at random and played a 2 hour game (in which the score didn’t really matter but everyone wanted to be a winner) followed by a great brunch cooked and served by Luke and Amelia. Not only did they provide the usual items of a great British breakfast followed by toast and preserves, but for those who prefer a more healthy diet there were platters of mixed fruit, pate with tomatoes and cucumber or cheese and biscuits. All washed down with fruit juice, tea and coffee. Well done Luke and Amelia.

Our next Mixed Drive and Brunch is on Friday 15th November and the sign up list will be with Luke a week or so beforehand, so put the date in your diary.
Kay Cadd will be running a mixed drive (without brunch) on all the other Fridays at 10am.

Luke is still looking for more “Crafty Cockneys”. The league plays on a Tuesday evening from 8.00 pm onwards and the season starts on 15th October and runs through to April, there are home and away matches.

If you are interested please contact Luke at the club or email him on l.griff62@gmail.com

Snooker

Do we have any budding Ronnie O’Sullivans who would be interested in playing in a snooker ladder at the club?

Basically all of the players who are interested get placed on a list in the snooker room, what then happens is people can challenge other players who are within a couple of names of theirs on the list. If they beat them then the names change places and so it carries on.

All new players get added to the bottom of the ladder and all players are expected to play at least one match in an agreed amount of time.

If we do get enough interest is happy to act as the administrator who can be contacted on 0208 776 0074. A full set of rules will be drawn up.
Or if anyone just fancies a game of Snooker, just a knock- about game. You can contact me by putting your contact
details in the Snooker room by the door, I will get back to you ASAP.

Behind the Bar

We had a very constructive meeting with our volunteers regarding staffing the evening indoor season.

The bar will now be open
Monday – Friday from 11.30 am – 4.00 pm, then from 5.00 pm – 9.00 pm.

As always, if no-one is using the bar up until 9.00 the bar will close.

I would like to welcome Ian Catchpole and John Seymour into the family of volunteers. I am sure they will do a good job once settled in. Thanks to all those who volunteer.

We shall also be serving tea, coffee, filter coffee and hot chocolate every evening. Once again if there are no matches on Saturday and Sunday the bar will be closed.

Norman – Bar Manager
