PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Hi everybody, another month gone and ever closing in on the IndoorSeason.

I was invited to the Captains Tea Party and had a lovely tea and in the presence of Marion who was presented with a Certificate from the County for her hard work and funding she has raised for the Club.  Many congratulations Marion, well-deserved.

I was also able to attend Finals Day for a short time where competitions were neck and neck keeping the spectators well and truly absorbed.  My congratulations go to all the Winners and to the Finalists for a nail biting performance and may this competitive attitude continue.  Sadly there were fewer spectators this year.  The barbecue and buffet, once again was of a very high standard even for those requesting BURNT sausages.  All were catered for.  Thanks Luke.

I have been asked to put forward an idea for Christmas Cards.  Marion has made 300 tags where members can write their greeting and tie it to the Christmas 🎄 for all to see.  Members then can make a donation to a Charity of their choice. Of course, this will be a personal choice, as I’m sure there will be members wishing to still send cards to other members.  A feedback to me would be appreciated.  Thanks.

All other changes in the pipe line are in progress, i.e. stairs to the flat for renting, bottom kitchen refurbishment and the problem with the electronic screen in the bar are all being dealt with.

We are still looking for a Bowling Committee Chairman to join us on the Board and would ask the members on this Committee to give this vacancy some serious thought, we need a spokesman for you.

Yvonne Russell was asked if she would come onto the Board as a member and she agreed, therefore, Alan Hart will take on the role as Bar and Catering Director and Yvonne will be Social Director.  However, they will be working as a team and am sure they will be successful in these areas.

I am taking this opportunity of wishing you all a happy, competitive Winter Season and look forward to seeing you all again.

Outdoor Finals Day – 1st September

Acknowledgements

Our thanks to both Outdoor section competition secretaries, namely Chris Uphill and Dave Warrington for their work on this event.

It is, of course, not possible to have a finals day without the support of those members who entered the competitions in the first place and we thank them too.

Special thanks to our dedicated greenkeeper, Steve Spencer who has worked tirelessly to provide us with the greens that all of us enjoy throughout the season. Thanks also to all those people who made the day a great success, caterers, bar staff, spectators etc.

No Croydon Finals day is complete with our very own umpire Jean Capell, special thanks go to Jean for the service that she has given us over many years.

Ladies indoor

Ladies Indoor Weekly Lottery

The Ladies Indoor section are re-starting the weekly lottery. To simplify the collection of your £1 for a ‘square’ we are asking participants to pay £5 every 5 weeks. This would secure the ‘square’ of your choice.

Each week £40 will be won and the remaining £9 goes into the section funds and ultimately into the club. The sign-up sheet will be hanging outside the indoor office and we trust you to put your fiver in the plastic pouch on the back and choose your number. Alternatively see any of the ladies indoor committee.

If you would rather pay £1 each week you are still welcome to do so.

Ladies Outdoor Committee

Ladies Captain’s Day took place on 25 August, one of the hottest days of the year, phew! 24 members played a number of ends but the matches were curtailed by the extreme heat and everyone retreated indoors earlier than planned, for some welcome cold drinks.

The raffle was held during the afternoon and all members and invited guests were later able to enjoy a delicious afternoon tea, including a selection of sandwiches and lovely cakes (latter provided by our very own cake-maker, Maggie Atkinson).

Many thanks are due to Maggie for her organisation of the afternoon (thanks to Barry too – and to Luke and the kitchen helpers).

As at 22 August, Croydon were top of the Croydon and District Ladies League but we await the final results as some of the other clubs still had to complete several matches. We would like to thank Pat Bentley in particular for kindly taking on the role of Captain for much of the season – and everyone else who has contributed during the season.

The Ladies Outdoor AGM will be held at 7.00 pm on Monday 14 October: please come along.

Loyal Service Award

Marion Branch was taken aback by the presentation of a Loyal Service Award for her many contributions to the club over the years. The award was presented by the Surrey County Women’s Bowling Association President, Penny Bruno, who was also accompanied by Dorothy Roberts, Immediate Past President, and Sheron Mitchell, County Secretary.

Reunion Lunch

On Friday 11th October 2019 there will be a re-union Buffet Lunch at the Masonic Halls, 73 Oakfield Road, Croydon, CR0 2UX at 12.30 for 1.00pm for Lady Bowlers in any of the Croydon Bowls Clubs at a cost of £15.00 per person.

Please put your name on the list which is on the board in the Ladies Changing room and has details of payment and the
closing date.

This is open to all lady bowlers.

Summer Outdoor Mixed Leagues

So here we are at the Summer/Winter transition. Fancy having had to reduce the number of ends in matches for too much heat! Let’s hope the winter won’t take its revenge with many feet of snow!

The Afternoon Fruits League lost its sponsor this season but we were delighted that Tom Carson continued his generous sponsorship of the Evening Babs Carson League. Actually, we managed to run well financially and the combined leagues made the magnificent profit for the Club of £1.

Kiwi were the Fruits League winners in the guise of Maggie Atkinson, George Bann, Maggie Bennett, Chris Davis, Geoff Feist, Mike Goode, John Guntrip, John Harewood, Barbara Jukes, Sue Lammas and Catherine Street. Well done to them for securing the win on the last day’s matches.

The “Tom Carson Trophy” went to “Fiat”, being decided in advance of the last day. The Fiat stalwarts were Pat Bentley, Andy Cox, Steve King, Bob Lock, Pat Nicholas, Ann Rathwell, Charles Stark and Barbara Tate. They also achieved a HotShot – did they claim it officially?

Last year we went down to 14 ends of triples in the “Carson” league and this year we dropped from 18 ends of rinks to 16 in the “Fruits” league. I asked both leagues’ players who attended their end-of-season presentations whether we have “got it right, yet?” And the answer was “Yes” in both cases.

So we can please some of the players some of the time and next year, if the Good Lord spares me, I can’t see the need for making further changes unless playing numbers are very different!

Winter Indoor Mixed Evening League

We have two teams fully committed to next season and two others in the throes. Also, the notice asking for players liking the idea of playing triples for 14 ends to sign up, has been there since mid-August. In the first 3 weeks we have 13 new competitors signed up and very few “Winter Visitors” from surrounding clubs have “Visited”. So I expect quite a lot of further interest to arise in the coming days/weeks.

With a brand new concept, the “getting-off-the-ground” stuff will be difficult and time-consuming so I don’t think we will start at the beginning of October but, the sooner the better afterwards. It’s a “watch this space jobbie!”

Men’s Indoor Season News 2019/2020

Having asked the EIBA (English Indoor Bowling Association) for clarification on rink selection when in competitions this season (other than club competitions) Claire Edson answered as follows below:

“Further to your email request I would advise that the rink played on for individual competitions is dictated on what the challenger books with their club. Therefore no drawing of rinks for individual competitions when at the club.”

i.e. all exactly the same as previous years. So no change to EIBA rules, if you are in Nationals, Surrey’s or L&SC all recognised competitions other than club internals, as the challenger, you can book a rink of your liking if you so desire.

Open Indoor 2 Wood Competition – Season 2019/2020

The entry forms for the ‘Open 2 Wood Competition’ are in the boxes for this season and I would ask all members to enter.

The competition will be well suited to all bowlers with an eye for the jack particularly front end bowlers both ‘Ladies and Men’.

The entry forms for this competition will be scattered around the clubhouse with a closing date of 31st October the final being played over finals weekend.

Please give your full support to this new open club competition.

The entry will be £2.00 and the winner and runner up will receive a cash prize based on the number of entries.

Recent Events

7th August Theatre Trip ”On your Feet!” What more can anyone want – picked up by a luxuriously comfortable coach and taken a few yards from the door of the London Coliseum. Terrific seats and a wonderful show – then whisked back to the club, all at very reasonable prices too………… Well done John!!!! Sunday 20th October – Book Fair Please help our club raise much needed funds by donating your unwanted books. Paperback novels in good condition are always popular. If you are looking for a bargain come along on the day between 10 am – 4 pm for a good browse. John Hilton Sunday 20th October – INDOOR OPEN DAY The Open days are always great fun and we hope to do something different on this one – keep your eyes open!!!! And the date free in your diaries. Croydon, Surrey County, the English Indoor Bowling Association and “Now Connect” – their website, have already placed our advert for this day on their sites. We are trying to get as many electronic adverts out there as we can. Magazine adverts are in place with SPAN and the Selsdon gazette. If you know of anywhere that we can place publicity for this event please let me know. We are also planning a 5,000 leaflet drop covering new areas If you can distribute leaflets i.e. in shop windows etc. in your area, please ask us for some. Dave Barkway is working very hard trying to get sponsors for the event – if you know of anyone who may be interested please let Dave know. One very good way of promoting the club would be for you to come along and to BRING A FRIEND, you probably all have someone who may be interested…….there will be refreshments available. More information in the next newsletter. Please remember this is YOUR club, and we need as much help as possible from you. Alan Hart THEY’RE OFF !!! Friday 25th October Race Night Forms are now available in the entrance hall for people to sponsor Horses and Races. Sponsors for 8 races and 64 horses (prizes on offer) needed to make this as successful as previous years. Entrance is £5 for members, £8 for non-members, horse sponsorship is £5 – you can win £25, and race sponsorship is £25 where you can win a £100. As we need to get the race cards printed (which is once again being done very professionally by Tony Hawkins), we need your entries in by 4th October.

Around the club

Mixed Drive and Brunch

There will be a mixed Drive and Brunch once a month on Fridays at 10am.

A week or so before the designated day sign the lunch sheet for Luke the caterer then turn up at 9.30 to sign in on the drive sheet. Rinks will be drawn by Kay, the green steward.

Have a game of bowls and once you have worked up an appetite enjoy brunch in the restaurant. It will be £5 well spent for an enjoyable morning of gentle exercise followed by good food, drink and social conversation.

The dates are printed in the fixture book so put them in your diary and join in.

The remaining Fridays are free for a mixed drive without the brunch.

Bridge Club


The Bridge Club meets in the committee room every Wednesday at 1.45 pm, normally about 12 people are in attendance cost is £1.00. Play is from 2.00 pm till 4.00pm.

Beginners are not accepted, players are expected to be at a basic ACOL level – sorry – tuition is not available, however, if you are interested in joining please contact Maureen Lyons on 0208 686 4507.

Do you know about Friday evenings?
Everyone is welcome to join in for a drink, games – indoors or (weather permitting) outside.
Friday evening from about 6 p.m. (if there is no other social event on in the Club). If you have a favourite game, bring it along.

Darts League


Luke is still looking for more “Crafty Cockneys”. The league plays on a Tuesday evening from 8.00 pm onwards and the season starts on 15th October and runs through to April, there are home and away matches.

Behind the Bar

The bar area is functioning well, but Norman is still looking for more volunteers

This will become more important as the indoor season starts!

If you feel you can give some time to volunteer behind the bar, please speak to Norman.

Catering

As previously stated the restaurant is open for business from 9.30 to 2.30 Monday to Friday serving a range of refreshments.

Plans are being drawn up for the winter season.

Snooker

Do we have any budding Ronnie O’Sullivans who would be interested in playing in a snooker ladder at the club?

Basically all of the players who are interested get placed on a list in the snooker room, what then happens is people can challenge other players who are within a couple of names of theirs on the list. If they beat them then the names change places and so it carries on.

All new players get added to the bottom of the ladder and all players are expected to play at least one match in an agreed amount of time.

If we do get enough interest Alan Whittlesey is happy to act as the administrator who can be contacted on 0208 776 0074. A full set of rules will be drawn up.
