Croydon began their season very early this year – October 9th – playing in the preliminary round of the Yetton Trophy. This National competition seems to start earlier each year giving so little time for adjusting from outdoor bowling. However, 4 rinks of ladies faced a strong team from Camberley Bowling Club winning on 2 rinks but sadly losing a close match 80-87. We now look forward to playing in the Yetton Plate competition at the beginning of November.
Our ladies played their first Club match of this new indoor season on Saturday 16th October away at Donyngs in Redhill. This was a SELL league game with 3 rinks playing. We had a thoroughly enjoyable and successful afternoon of bowling, coming away with a convincing win and 12 points on the board. Croydon won on 2 rinks, skipped by Gill Long and Joyce Barker. A good start upon which to build.
On Sunday 17th, 8 of our ladies & gentlemen played in the Egham Trophy – a National mixed competition – against Lewisham. A great game played in a friendly competitive spirit. After 10 ends across all 4 rinks there was nothing in the game (43-43) after 15 end the two away rinks really picked up with the two home rinks keeping the game tight with one rink win and one rink losing (60-50). Croydon made their final push for the line to win the game overall 93-66. Well done Croydon great win. Next round -v- Donyngs IBC.
Croydon continued to progress in the mixed Egham Trophy today (31st October), with their second round match against Donyngs – with the two away teams travelling across to Redhill in torrential rain, and very thankful to be bowling indoors! The match was close throughout. The Home teams both began well and quickly opened a good lead, while the Away teams took time to find their way. However, as the match progressed Donyngs began to pull back at Croydon and our Away teams also started to build their score, making for an exciting final few ends. The Home teams were able to stretch their lead but it was nip and tuck at Donyngs. However, after completing the 21 ends, Croydon won the match 91 – 77, winning on 3 out of the 4 rinks. We will now face Sutton in the next round.
