Hi everybody I hope you are enjoying this beautiful weather for your Bowling.
I am sorry I have been unable to get to the Club, I have put the Zimmer to bed and am getting around unaided and will be back very soon.
Tina is making progress after her op and is home recuperating. Best wishes Tina.
As a reminder there are three board member vacancies, Director/Manager for Bar and Catering, Development Manager, and Chairman for Bowling Committee. Please give them some thought we need you.
Good reports are coming through regarding the bar and restaurant so thanks must go to Luke, Fin and Norman. Keep up the good work.
The refurbishment of the flat is still ongoing also the lower kitchen.
I look forward to seeing you all soon.
Do you know about Friday evenings?
Tony has been hosting a “friends evening” in the bar on Friday evenings (when there are no social events). Everyone is welcome to join in for a drink, games – indoors or (weather permitting) outside.
You bring your own food and just relax and have a good natter, and perhaps a game of croquet, cards, and parlour games – in fact anything you like. I can vouch for it being a friendly evening – and the food is good!!!
We would love to see you. – Why not give it a try?
Talk to Tony Boyer for details.
Recent Events – EDF Corporate Day
Following their event day last year, EDF returned on the afternoon of the 4th July for a mix of business briefing and bowling pleasure. Having provided enough pizza to feed the entire street, they opted for a knockout competition on 6 rinks.
Given the hot weather, the drinks flowed freely and as that intake increased the discipline of who played whom seemed to decrease at the same rate!
I’m not sure who won, but they all had a good time. The club’s organisation went without a hitch and thanks are due for a great team effort covering the bar, restaurant and the coaching/supervision on each of the 6 rinks.
Thanks to all those who helped !!! We look forward to welcoming EDF again next year.
Michael Laikin – Antiques valuationsSuch a shame we had to cancel the afternoon event on 17th July. Unfortunately Michael Laikin was taken ill and was unable to attend to value your collectables. We wish Michael well and, hopefully we can welcome him back on another date.
Westcliffe on Sea – Summer Outing
We had a fabulous day – and the weather was not too hot. Fifty members travelled by coach to the venue. Unfortunately it was just too far from the sea for a paddle but I think everyone enjoyed the meal and show and a wonderful day out with friends….
Where shall we go next year? Let us know if you have any ideas.
7th August Theatre Trip ”On your Feet!”

Sharpen your pencils and your brains for another fun night of questionable questions and answers……………..
Sunday 20th October – INDOOR OPEN DAY and Book Fair

Sponsors for 8 races and 64 horses (prizes on offer) needed to make this as successful as previous years. Contact Alan for further details asap!!! More information will be available soon.
Ladies Outdoor Committee
Such a mixture of weather this summer – hope most of you have managed to avoid the rainy days when playing in matches – or even the occasional really hot ones! Over the last few weeks, we have had a run of 4 C&D League matches. Croydon won 3 out of 4, though I understand most were fairly close matches – well done, Ladies!
We now have 3 friendlies, then another batch of C&D League matches, so please keep putting your names down.
We also look forward to The Ladies of Croydon finals day on 17 August and Ladies Captain’s Day on 25 August, so please support these too.
Correction to the last issue: the C&D League match which was postponed from 20 June to 3 September should have read Purley Ladies, not Caterham – a senior moment – apologies!
Men’s Indoor Season News 2019/2020
We have been advised by Bowls Surrey, that in National and County competitions players and clubs will no longer be able to choose the rink they want to play on, in future they must nominate 2 rinks which will then be drawn by the umpire, on duty green steward or and independent person preferably in front of their opponent. We have now been told that this applies to both indoor and outdoor national and county competitions.
Surrey County Men’s Finals Day – 28th July
This event is being staged at Croydon Bowling club, congratulations to Luke Griffin and Adam Barer on reaching the Junior Pairs Final, after beating Hugo Emanuel and George Hooper in the semi-finals.
I am sure Luke would appreciate all the support you can give him on 28th July!
A BBQ buffet luncheon served from 12.00.
Surrey Ladies’ 2 wood day – 24th June
I would like to thank Luke and Barry for the lovely food provided on the Ladies’ 2 wood day on 24th June. I arrived early and was invited to have a free breakfast of fruit and cereal. At lunch we ate BBQ sausages, chicken and burgers with a variety of cold meats and salads. It was very tasty and excellent value – it is still being talked about in zone 2.
Well done Croydon – I’m not sure whose idea it was to treat the Ladies to this feast but it was a very good one.
Jane (Purley Ladies)
Summer mixed leagues and a bit more
I hate this time of year! We have two piles of match cards in the locker – one for games yet to be played and the other for games already played. Now, there are more on the “Played” pile than on the “Yet to be played” one. So summer is more than half over! ‘orrible!!
We have been fortunate with the weather so full programmes have been played – actually, we reduced the number of ends twice because it has been too hot! We have had a generally reliable turn-out but, as we all age, a few senior moments have occurred when we have had to compromise and maybe borrow a player on the day. It is galling when a team is left short for the sake of a phone call – emergencies excepted.
We have had slightly more players for the two leagues this year and it would be nice to think this is a trend which will be maintained next year. We have reduced both league competitions by 2 ends in the last couple of years and I haven’t heard any complaint that it’s too little or too many, so I trust we’ll use the same format next year.
In this July heat-wave, my thoughts go to long winter evenings of indoor bowls when, next season, we start a new competition for less aspiring (or perspiring today) bowlers. The Second Division of the Men’s Evening Fours League will be limited to 14 ends (or 2 hours) play, ending about 8.30 p.m., so that we, probably tired older chaps, can be home earlier than previously. In fact, I say “chaps” but we hope to welcome “chapesses” to join us in this reduced format. Notices requesting members to sign up for next season will be posted in the indoor “arena” in due course!
The second division is now likely to be a trios rather than rinks.
Behind (and In front of) the Bar
Have you tried Normans cocktails?
Norman is stilI looking for Volunteers to work behind the bar. it is hoped to open the Bar lunchtimes and evenings, Monday to Friday. The bar will close after matches have finished. The bar will also be open Saturday and Sundays when matches are being played.
There’ s a lot more to running a bar and restaurant than you actually see – re-stocking, clearing, cleaning pipes, travelling to wholesalers etc. etc. It’s not just pulling pints!!
All these things take time….continued thanks to Norman and Luke.
Put your names down now!
Many thanks to all the Ladies and Gentlemen
who organise these games.

On a winning streak in the Johns inter county championship, which they won for a record 22nd time last year, they have now reached the semi-final stage which is being played at Leamington on 3rd of August. The semi-finals and finals are played on the same day starting at 10 am.
Croydon’s Gill Long is a member of the team and is playing with Pam Garden, Shamista Patel and Norma Beals. A coach has been arranged to take supporters, there is information in the Ladies changing room.
Any support will be very welcome. It will be a great day.
Congratulations to Gause and Wilbert Williams on winning the 2019 Hastings open pairs for visually impaired competitors. The event was played over the

If you can build a head when lead or second
are playing wide or narrow, or too short,
and third, upon whose skill you always reckoned
is doing anything but what he ought.
If you can win, and not be too uplifted,
or lose, and not be downcast by defeat,
remembering that the lucky or the gifted,
can, on their off days, both be beat.
If you can smile, and not give way to cursing,
or blame the green, or deem your luck too hard
when the position you’ve been grimly nursing
Is shattered by a drive you could not guard.
If you can draw the shot right on the kitty
when half a dozen woods are in your way.
If you can grin and hum a cheerful ditty
when ends are burnt and jack is out of play.
If you can give your third the hand you favour
and see him take the other and go wide,
and then go down, and try and draw a saver
with the kitty guarded well on every side.
If you can drive, and miss, and not be worried
by your opponents shout of “still we lie”,
and draw again with heart and brain unflurried,
and tap the winning wood and make it fly.
If you can draw the shot in that last minute
when yells are called and something must be done,
yours is the game, and you deserve to win it,
and what is more, you’ll be a skip, my son.
