Don’t forget to look at our website – now being updated regularly.
Just search for Croydon Bowling Club!!
I believe some of you are having problems downloading the Club’s newsletter – so I have changed the format so hopefully no-one will have any problems. Please let me know if you prefer the format this way or as before in columns.
We are sad to announce the passing of Dave West an indoor member for many years and Captain of both souwest and norwest both indoor leagues. Dave played his outdoor bowls at Croydon MOs where he took on numerous offices. We send our sincere condolences to his family.
The club wishes Dennis Francis a speedy recovery from his recent stay in hospital. Dennis had the honour of being County indoor President and is an accomplished bowler, unfortunately he was poorly for most of the last indoor season. Get well soon Den.
We are pleased to announce the birth of Alfie Grant son of our ex member Josh Grant and the great grandson Of Jean Williamson. Congratulations to both Josh and his partner Claire.
OPEN on 1ST SEPTEMBER 2020
Hi everybody, as you know we are working on opening the Indoor Green on the 1st September. All floor directions are in place, sanitizers and seating arrangements for distancing laid out. Your Board of Directors have worked their socks off to get the Club up and running for you and we would appreciate it if you would abide by the safety rules we are asking for.
Masks or face visors will be worn on the Indoor Green whilst playing. This will be reviewed later.
When arriving at the Club we must ask you to sign in with date and time of arrival, this is essential as we must keep a “track and trace” in case a member contracts the virus. On leaving the Club you will also sign out with the relevant information required. The lockers will not be available but designated areas will be available for those bowlers who are unable to take their bowls home. Items must be in a bag and plainly marked with your name.
Collection of bowls:
You can collect your bowls on
Thursday 27th August 10 am – 1 pm
and Friday 28th August 1- 5pm
The air flow in the bowls hall will be improved by the use of fans, situated at the side of the green. These will have the effect of changing the air on the green twice a day, which will follow prescribed guide lines. We will also be using a fogging machine in the near future. This will be used throughout the club to include the bar, restaurant and common areas including the toilets. It only needs 15 minutes after use before the area is clear to use, so will not impede members.
These fans can be adjusted if necessary but we would ask that YOU do not touch them!
I would like to take this opportunity of thanking all those members who volunteered to Marshall outdoors, Jean for taking the bookings and Paul for arranging the Comps and Saturday Drives. We are forever grateful to you all, but would not expect any less from our Croydon Members.
We cannot give any indication, at this point in time, regarding Nationals and County games and matches, but rest assured this will be relayed to you immediately we hear.
Thanks also must goes to Alan, Bar and Catering and Yvonne, Social for their diligence in getting both sections ready for the opening. They have many surprises for you in this dismal time and will help us to get together, not quite like old times, but close. Thank you again.
I wish you all a happy Indoor Season despite the situation we are having to deal with and look forward to seeing you all in September
The Ladies Indoor Section need a General Secretary.
If you are interested in taking this job on, please call Gill Harrisson, who will be happy to talk you through what is required.
A great deal has been happening while we have been away!! I think some of you think that the Board of Directors have been sitting at home doing very little during this time of lockdown! Far from the truth, they have been working tirelessly in order to keep the Club running; paying bills, maintaining the property, ensuring security as well as sourcing, planning, keeping up to date and putting into force the Government and Bowling Associations recommendations regarding COVID. The Club would not function if these members of the Board and other volunteers were not doing their utmost to ensure the re-opening of the Club and safety of the members.
If you feel we have not kept in touch, we apologise – but let’s get Bowling Again once more.
For session times etc. please refer to Paul’s letter to you all of 10th August. Also note you do not have to leave the Club once you have played – enjoy the restaurant/bar facilities if you want to – just leave your bags in the designated places.
Looking forward to getting back to indoor bowls. Our Match Secretaries, both men’s and ladies, are in the process of contacting other clubs to see if they can arrange some inter club matches, both friendly and league. These will possibly be three rinks of fours or any combination that they are happy with. Information on these will be published as soon as they are confirmed. If matches are arranged please support the Team Captains and put your name down to play.
When you return you will notice some changes have occurred since March:
We have installed a new security system. This will not affect your entry into the Club (you can still use the code) but will improve the safety and security of the building when un-occupied. You may have noticed the cameras sited around the outdoor greens, certain relevant areas of the premises and grounds can be viewed remotely by some members of the Board (from home!)
We have also overhauled the kitchen and installed a new floor. All the appliances and units have been deep-cleaned and made ready for use by our new Restaurant Manager, Sam.
Norman has also cleaned and made ready the bar so that it will open from 1st-4th September from noon to 4.00 pm and the restaurant from 9.30 a.m. – 3.30 p.m.
On 6th September the restaurant and bar will be open for pre-booked Sunday lunch. (See Bar & Catering report).
As Daphne has said, signs and provisions have been made to comply with Government regulations required for social distancing. You will notice that some tables and chairs have been removed to allow more space. You are requested NOT to move any items without authorisation and to abide by the rules laid down. Remember this is not only for your safety but for the safety of your friends and colleagues.
You will be required to sign in at each visit and sign out before you leave. This is essential for track and trace purposes.
It is not possible at this time to allow the snooker room to be opened. This will be reviewed.
Bowls Director’s Report
For your further information:
Roll-up slots can be booked in advance via Jean Hunter. However, members can walk in and play if rinks are not fully in use. All six rinks may be used but no more than six people on a rink. Going forward the Club are looking at an on-line booking system. More details will follow. We will be running the aggregates from the start on Tuesday and Thursday morning at 10am.
Our senior green steward has been asked to liaise with the two sections to ensure stewards are on daily duty during bowling. Players completing a session will be asked to leave the rinks within 15 minutes. However, players are welcome to remain in the club using the restaurant and bar or return to the arena as a spectator for the next session.
Similarly visitors and spectators are welcome to come into the club to take advantage of the bar and catering facilities.
Against all the odds and possibly your thoughts, we are receiving enquiries daily from people wishing to join. On Monday afternoon alone we had eight request for membership forms. This is tremendous news for the club so –
if you see a new face – please make them welcome.

We have received the following information from SCIBA:
“SCIBA County Friendly, Presidents and Patrons Matches for 2020-2021 Season
It is with regret that given the significant constraints imposed by Government and EIBA Guidelines, plus the risk to our members, that SCIBA have now taken the decision to cancel all our Inter-County Friendlies and Deric Holmes Memorial Trophy fixtures for the coming season.
In addition we have decided to cancel all Presidents and Patrons matches until further notice. This will however be under review throughout the season, as we all hope that the situation will improve. The aim being that we can resume some, albeit reduced format matches, to support our clubs later in the season…. should they be willing and that there is an appetite for them within our Associations’ members.
Support the Club
In the interim, please support your Club in these difficult times, in whatever way you can!!!
Hon. Match & Fixture Secretary
Surrey County Indoor Bowling Association
Tony Bourne has resigned his position as Works Director. As you know Tony worked tirelessly for the Club and we give him our grateful thanks.
Dave Warrington has agreed to take on the Chairmanship of the Works committee for the time being and Allan Whittersley will be joining the working party.
Bar and Catering
A new menu has been produced and will be on display in the restaurant. Unfortunately, initially, the food choices will be limited and the bar will not serve draught beer, however, we shall keep you informed of any changes as and when they occur. Please be aware we shall be operating a cashless system so you will need your credit cards. Of course, like everything else, as restrictions relax this will be reviewed.
