Memories

It is with great sadness that we have been informed of the passing of Joan Simmons who died on 20th July. Joan was a member of Croydon Bowls for many years until she moved to Pagham. We have passed our condolences to her family.

Also

Eugene McDonagh, 88, who would have been celebrating his 89th on Fathers Day, peacefully passed away on Tuesday 16th June 2020 at his home in South Croydon with his daughter, Caroline, by his side.

He is survived by his daughter, two sons and their families who will all miss him dearly.

Eugene will be remembered at a limited Covid-safe funeral service to be held at the Catholic Church of the Holy Family, Sanderstead on Friday, 31st July at 1pm, before finally being reunited with his wife, Winifred, at Bandon Hill Cemetery. The service can be virtually accessed via the Holy Family’s website.

We have received a letter from St. Raphael’s Community Fundraiser thanking Croydon Bowlers for their contribution of £114.00 to the charity.

This was raised during the Christmas period with our Christmas tree – the brainwave of the ladies committee. It is a long way off but maybe we could do a similar thing this year?

The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity have just launched a new running challenge: the MarsdenMarathon, run 26.2 miles in 26 days this September. Whether you’re a seasoned runner or just beginning, this challenge is for all abilities! You can complete just one mile a day, or all in one go – however you do it, the vital funds you raise will help support staff and patients at The Royal Marsden. President's Report

Hi everybody,

I hope you are all enjoying your outdoor bowling. I have had good input and, of course, negative comments.  I am afraid you will all have to bear with us as our aim is to make sure you are all safe and we are within the government ruling.

The competitions for Tuesdays and Thursdays are in place but I am led to believe some members did not see the Notice on the Corbett Shelter Window!!  There is limited space outdoors for Notices so will you all just take a look to see what is in store for you.

Saturday play will hopefully be in place by 1st August, keep your eyes peeled.  The same procedure will be “ring for time of play”.   This, as a matter of interest to all players is that we have to log your attendance to comply with the “track and trace” rules imposed.  Please accept that we, as a Board, have your safety as apriority.

We are now looking into the Indoor Season!!  There is a huge amount of work to be put into place before this can happen BUT, rest assured, work is going on right now for our opening. We are aiming for 1st September!  YES, it is not a 5 minute job, all “rules and regulations “ have to put in place and the Indoor Club, Restaurant, Bar, Toilet facilities must be compliant with the regulations.  At the moment changing rooms cannot be used!  Sanitation also has to be observed, more so than outdoors.  I am asking all members to be patient The Board are working our socks off to get you back to your bowling.

During this lockdown Tina Welsh has resigned from her position as Book-Keeper due to her health.  The Board and Club Members thank Tina wholeheartedly for the Stirling work she has done over the past years keeping our Club on track and we send you our very best wishes for the future.  We look forward to seeing you later in the year.

We have some good news Barry Swannie has been co-opted onto the Board to deal with our finance situation. Welcome Barry from all of us.  We must, however, thank John Hilton for the stupendous job he has done for the Club during this lockdown and previously.  John has managed to apply for government “lockdown” grants without we would be in Queer Street.  We are sorry to lose you John but we know you have other work to do and thank you wholeheartedly for helping us through this awful period.

We are still looking for a Secretary to do our office work in the upstairs office.  This is not a 9 – 5  job, it is a position where you will work when necessary.  Gill Harrisson  is quite happy to talk you through what is required.  Please give this some thought “more hands make less work”.

I want to finish this report by thanking ALL my Directors for the hard work and support they have given me but more importantly to the continuance of the Croydon Club because without their dedication, where would we be??  I dread to think. 

We are surviving and we will because our members want it that way.

Greens Report

At present the greens are playing well.  We are hoping to extend play on the outdoor greens – dependant on the weather  – until the third week in September.

Rest assured, we are doing all we can to give you a longer season to make up for the “lockdown” closure.

To All members

You will be pleased to hear that following the Government’s approval of the EIBA issue 4 proposals to re-open indoor bowling clubs, the Board have agreed to aim at reopening the cub house and indoor bowling as from the 1st of September 2020. Subject to no change in the guidelines and that we have a full plan and risk assessment in place meeting the Covid-19 regulations and guidelines.

A BIG thank you to all the Marshals for helping during the reopening of the outdoor greens. We now have been able to withdraw the present Marshal system as the members are used to the sanitising regulations and the booking procedure.

The outdoor pairs’ competition is proceeding well and as from August the 1st we are opening outdoors on a Saturday for two sessions for roll ups or an Aggregate. The times are 10.00am – 12.30pm and 1.00pm – 3.30pm.  The booking system remains in place by phoning Jean Hunter.  If a rink is available players who have not booked must add their name to the rink bookings at the club.

More good news for those bowling outdoors we can now have all rinks in use and triples are now allowed.

A Big thank you to Jean for managing all the bookings and to Anthony Goucher for the help he has given me in the organising the re-opening.

Works Report

It has been decided not to use the Corbett shelter until the windows and frames have been secured. At present the shelter is unsafe and no-one should use it.

Quotes are awaited for the replacement wooden gates to the rear Car Park and the inner gates also need attention.

It is also necessary to replace the kitchen flooring this will be installed in August.

The Club buildings are all very old and need a lot of maintenance to be done to keep in good condition. We used to have good working teams helping with a lot of the work but we are now struggling to get any volunteers.

If you see anything in the Club that needs repairing/painting etc. and if you feel you could give any help at all, please let me know. We desperately need a working party of volunteers.

with the day to day running of the Club. Gill Harrisson has carried out this task in the past and has now relinquished the role (Thanks Gill!).

There are several people to help anyone who can undertake any office duties and the Board would be extremely grateful for any help. If you feel you would like to know more, please ask Daphne or talk to any of the Board members.

Men’s Indoor

I have no additional info since the last newsletter. However, after reading the latest info from the EIBA i do believe there is a light at the end of the tunnel which Ii hope to hear more about at the Bowls Committee meeting to be held on 31/7/20.

I am also advised that the Board will be writing to all members shortly with all the information relevant to the resumption of indoor bowling. In the meantime stay safe.

Reference: CBC Men’s Indoor Bowls:

As I am sure most of you are aware now that the English Indoor BA have given their approval for the Indoor Bowling Season to commence, so long as their strict guidelines are in place.

CBC are ‘aiming’ to open on the 1st of September but as to how, what, why and when remains to be seen. In my role as your Men’s Competition Secretary I am talking to various bowls people asking for their views and in some their requests, when known I will endeavour to give you more details.

In the June Newsletter I stated that my intention was still to play the clubs semi-finals and finals from season 2019/2020 if at all possible through September but until I speak to the members in these competitions with regards to what they themselves want to do in respect of returning to bowls, there can be no decision made.

At this moment I see two possibilities:

(1) That we class the season as finished with all 2019/2020 competitions closed at whatever stage they were at lock down.

This way championship singles, pairs & triples semi-finalists will all go through to entry into the Surrey County Indoor Bowls Association Draw as per usual but only if they so wish. Obviously in this case, with no outright winners, there will be no names this year for the honours boards.

(2) All competitions are played out to an ultimate winner, this would have to be through September finishing complete by the 30th (last day of the month) with all players having to contact their opposition and organise these games themselves.

Just to keep you aware all competition entry money is held by CBC and has been ring-fenced by John Hilton in the company accounts for safe keeping.

I am at this stage awaiting instruction from Surrey County Indoor BA as to their intention to commit to competitions this season and will inform you all in due course.

As your Competition Secretary I shall continue to work on instruction and ruling from relevant associations and senior club officials.

Please bear in mind that the aim of CBC is to open on 1st September but there is an awful lot of work to be done before then.

Bar and catering report

During July we were informed that the government would allow the reopening of the bar restaurant and indoor facilities in Bowls club. It was agreed at a board meeting held on 25th of July that we would work towards providing a bar and restaurant service from week including 1st September, days and times to be agreed. Also that there will probably be some limitations initially such as no draught beer and a simplified menu.

To get all of the above in place a COVID committee has been set up which will meet weekly to oversee all of the changes that will  be needed to to ensure we open in a safe manner, this will be reviewing the Governments list of restrictions and taking the necessary steps to introduce them.

We will introduce  our new catering manageress Sam Collins, Sam’s appointment was due to start on 1st April, and as we all know the club went into lockdown shortly before that date. Sam has a lot of experience in this field and has already come up with ideas that she will be keen to put into practise. I hope you will all make her most welcome.

One of the guidelines suggested is that clubs become cashless, and we will be putting this in place, so all purchases in the restaurant and bar will be made by card.

Similarly there will be a need for every member to sign in when attending the club, this to ensure we follow the governments track and trace system, as we have to keep records for 21 days of all people entering the club. 

You will already have seen that lots of outlets have introduced 2 metre markings and arrows to guide you around areas, we will also be introducing these. Similarly there will be sanitisers in place. Perspex sheets will also be installed in the bar and restaurant and Informative notices will be put up where necessary.  

Tables and chairs will be relocated to ensure we are following current COVID Guidelines, please do not move them.                        

It was planned to install the small fridge in the Corbett shelter for outdoor green bowlers. Unfortunately the use of Corbett Shelter has been compromised and cannot be used until renovations have been done.

Although a lot of the above may seem daunting it is all being done for your safety, which is our main concern.  We will be reviewing opening times and the limitations in place periodically to coincide with an increased footfall within the club.

We are still trying to carry on as normal and have already booked some wonderful events for next year!

We hope to welcome our new restaurant manageress on 6th September with a bargain Sunday Lunch, Sam is keen to arrange more lunches if we can. See later advert……

We shall have more news in the next letter and hopefully will be able to offer more events. In the meantime keep safe and well.

Theatre News

Well it can only be good news that some theatres are starting to get their productions underway like the Phoenix rising from the ashes! Others have still got some way to go because if it’s a large production there are a great many people working behind the scene with very little room. Hence a problem with social distancing.

If you booked to go to see “Hairspray” you should if you haven’t already checked had the full cost paid directly into your bank account. This refund also included the cost of the “High Tea” at Browns. So much for our 10th Anniversary Celebrations!

More good news, at the moment “Pretty Woman” which we are due to see on Wednesday 11th November is still on. The production company have announced that they are at present only rescheduling up to 20th September. So fingers crossed not only will the show be on we will be able to travel on the coach to see it.

As for 2021, we are already fully booked to see “The Drifters Girl” on 10th February but I am not going to make any further bookings until I see the full range of show available.

To all Members of Croydon Bowling & Sports Club

The Board of Directors met on 25th July 2020. Rest assured every one of your Board has been working extremely hard during this pandemic to keep the building safe, the greens in good condition and to ensure we can return to bowling as soon as possible.

We were very pleased that we were able to open, with restrictions, the outdoor greens early in June. All those who participated in this exercise are to be congratulated. Paul, Tony and Jean have set up a commendable structure and even instigated games and aggregates under difficult circumstances. We are set to extend playing times to include Saturday with effect from 1st August – for further information, please ring Paul Baker.  It may also be possible, to extend the outdoor season, weather permitting, keeping the greens open until the third week in September, then shutting A green and keeping B green open a little longer.

With regard to the opening of the indoor greens – this has now been sanctioned by the regulatory bodies. Croydon are working toward opening and commencing restricted games from week commencing 1st September. Of course, rules and regulations change every week, if not, every day – and we have to keep up with the legislation. We also have to purchase and install the necessary equipment to allow us to open.

We are pleased to say that it is also anticipated that the Bar and Restaurant will be able to open in September on a cashless basis. It will not be feasible or practical to open as usual if there are too few customers!  Normal resumption of service will be dependent on “footfall”. But we will do our best!!!

We do, however, hope to have a “Sunday Roast” on 6th September.  This, of course, will be within strict social distancing and COVID rules and will need to be booked in advance, by telephone (please phone Alan Hart for further details 0777 2022 156). Obviously, once again, we are obliged to ensure all safety measures are in place and purchased. We have an added problem in that we have had to renew the floor covering in the kitchen, this cannot be done until mid-August.

We do intend to keep you all informed of any developments as and when they occur, with this newsletter and by telephone, but it has been difficult to relay all the information to all of our members on every aspect. Of course, you can telephone us with any query you may have.

We thank those of you who have remained loyal to the Club during this awful time.

 Please be patient and understanding of the difficulties we face. We are, after all, all volunteers!!!!

21 Years of Croydon Bowling Tours

It is difficult to believe that next year will be my 21st year of taking a group of bowlers and supporters on tour. Looking back at our tour brochure for 2000 we went to Bournemouth and stayed at the Ullswater Hotel. Some of our tourist on that tour are sadly no longer around, but we still have a few that are still bowling. In the first game against Bournemouth BC we had Val Rowe, Daphne Lye and myself in the team. In fact we are the only ones left throughout the whole tour!

So where are we going next year? Somewhere where we haven’t toured before so I hope having read through the details you would like to join us
