Anyone know what these three word represent? (in relation to the Club!!) Worm.woof.incomes
Hi everybody…. I hope all of you who came to the Open Day enjoyed it. The weather was not kind to us but our stalwart stall holders and coaching teams weathered what was thrown at them and with great success. It makes me very proud to be a member of the Croydon Club and how the efforts put in are rewarded by the success of these events. These events take weeks to prepare and thanks must be given to Yvonne and Alan for heading this and to all those who contributed.
Indoors was also covered by Members giving tasters and showing visitors around. Bar and Catering also came into their own A GREAT SUCCESS AND MANY, MANY THANKS TO YOU ALL.
We are still in dire need to fill our vacancies on the Board and I would like you all to give thoughts in this direction, we need to get vacancies filled to give the existing Directors a helping hand in keeping Croydon, a top Club. We are in desperate need of a Membership Secretary as we now, sadly have lost Frank. Dave has been doing his utmost to assist but really needs some help.
Please consider putting your name forward.
ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
20th September 7.00 pm
There will be no newsletter in September (I am on holiday). Unless anyone volunteers to do it……
It is with sorrow that we report that Frank Snell passed away on 6th July 2021.
Frank joined Croydon Bowling Club in 2005 and was a valued member of the finance section, providing important information in helping to steer the committee. He was also our membership secretary.
During the time he was fit and well he supported the club bowling tours and attended many of our social events. He was a distinguished character in the Club whose dry wit was often misunderstood, – (he did it his way) but he was a kind and generous person and will be missed by those who knew him.
Our sincere condolences go to his family.
What a miserable few weeks it has been – rain and more rain! But we are promised better temperatures and some sunshine soon. Ideal weather for bowling.
I would like to give you a date for your diaries.
We are planning to have a Pre-Season meeting on: Saturday 18th September at 10.00 am upstairs in the Committee Room.
Following a recent Ladies Indoor Committee meeting we discussed the league situation as we have had several fold as they didn’t have enough members. Our League Secretary, Chris Uphill, will put forward proposals for the 2021 Season as soon as possible to give you advanced information for discussion at the Pre-Season meeting.
Jane and I are planning to run a MIXED DRIVE on Friday mornings from 10.00 -12.00 where the diary allows. We did manage to have one just before we were put into Lockdown in 2020, which everyone said that they enjoyed and was well supported. Do come along as they are good fun, competitive and very friendly!
Meanwhile stay safe.
Ladies Indoor Captain
Ladies Outdoor Section
Hope you are all enjoying bowling at the height of the season. Please continue to put your names on the match sheets, so that we can fulfil the fixtures. The C&D League schedule for June is on the notice board in the lobby and Croydon have 4 points, so about average. The Smith Trophy is doing well but last week our game against Sutton was postponed due to thunder and lightning but will be rearranged. The C&D League with Purley last Thursday was also postponed until 1st September. Croydon is hosting a SCWBA 2 wood day on 23rd July which is the finals, so should be an exciting event.
Men’s Indoor Section
I trust everyone is enjoying the summer and the reduction in Covid restrictions. There is not a great deal to report although I can tell you the match fees for our members in club matches will be £9 and £4 for those playing in the Denny Cup and over 60s double rink games.
The County have provisionally agreed that the indoor County league for this season only will be 3 rinks. However, clubs with a large membership can enter 2 teams if they wish and everything will be reviewed at the end of the season.
Until we know membership numbers, we are unable to plan to much for our internal leagues although Wayne and Luke will be contacting league captains from mid-August onwards to see if they will running their teams.
In Early December Dave Williams will be organising a “Children in need” charity day – more details to follow soon.
Enjoy the rest of the summer
RECOMMENDATIONS FOR YOUR CONTINUED SAFETY – COVID 19
On 19th July the Government have stated that they will relax the mandatory rules in relation to the COVID 19 Pandemic.
Croydon Bowling & Sports Club will be, as always, following any Government guidelines in this respect.
- We shall continue to sanitise all areas (did you realise that Rick has been doing this throughout the crisis – spraying all areas with a sanitising solution – for your protection?)
- The barriers in the restaurant and bar will remain for the time being.
- We shall continue to sanitise tables, chairs etc. after use.
- Sanitisers will continue to be provided, please use them.
- WE RECOMMEND THAT MASKS CONTINUE TO BE WORN WHILST TRAVERSING THROUGH THE BAR AND RESTAURANT AREAS OF THE CLUB.
WE ASK YOU AND GUESTS TO:
- Continue to be diligent, wash your hands frequently.
- Use the sanitising sprays provided throughout the Club.
- Do not shake hands.
- Respect others’ social distance.
- Enjoy your bowling in our safe environment
The Board of Directors thank you for your co-operation
We may have to live with this threat – but let us all remain as safe as possible.
Summer League and Aggregate 2021
With the relaxation of Government strictures once summer had (nearly) started, I thought I would try to withdraw from running the two mixed leagues – Tuesday Afternoon Fours and “Babs Carson” Thursday Evening Triples but nothing significant materialised. So, instead, I asked for some help and things progressed to my running the Tuesday Afternoon League and Tony Rowland looking after Thursday Evenings.
I thought that 36 players should be the minimum number to run a league and the Fruits League just got there when we fixed the date for the first matches. Another 4 joined later so 40 players was not too bad – except that you had to be in the first 100 to sign up 7 years ago!
This time, the great thing was that all of the “Captains” I asked, agreed to help and to organise their teams, relieving me of any arm-twisting which has usually dogged the “Meeting” we used to have pre-season. “Thanks very much” to Maggie Bennett, Pat Bentley, David Swift, Chris Davis and Tony Rowland for their support. Meanwhile in the background David Blackburn weaved his magic to make the whole lot happen.
However, only 23 players signed up for Thursday evenings so we couldn’t run the usual league but we played around with ideas for other competitions and we decided that an “Aggregate” was the most favoured option. The fact that Ken Kosbab knew what he was doing and had all the necessary paraphernalia helped immensely. With the enthusiasm of Chris Davis, the “Ken, Tony and Chris Show” has been most successful.
Tom Carson has sponsored the Thursday league for many years and he so very kindly agreed to continue his sponsorship this year. BUT, with the abandonment of the Thursday evening league, I felt that we should transfer the Babs Carson (Plate) Trophy to the one remaining league. The Fruits League had twice been sponsored by an Insurance Company but that finished a couple of years ago. Tom was very happy to accept the transference.
So where did all this land up? The answer is the most friendly/happy couple of days a week I have had since I joined the Club over 10 years ago. The atmosphere on Steve’s superb greens and in the bar after every game has been fantastic. In the past, if anyone stayed for a drink, even for a short time, you were lucky. Here, we had a good number of Fruiterers and on every occasion all of the Aggregate performers who turned up each time (up to 16 at the time of writing) stayed behind for a drink (thanks mainly to mine hosts, John and Jane Seymour) and a chat!
For the rest of this season, we have weekly games until the last Fruits League matches on Tuesday, 24th August. At 5.00 p.m. we will have a “Buffet and Wine Presentation” event where the “Babs Carson Fruits League Trophy” will be given to the winners, along with individual prizes. We know Sam will do us proud!!
The last date for the Aggregate is hoped to be Thursday, 2nd September when Tony Rowland would like to put on a similar function to the Fruits Presentation effort.
Snooker – Now Open!!!
Hello to all club members, both new and old.
I would like to inform you all that we are expecting the snooker room to be open from
Monday 26th July
To all our new members I would like to welcome you to our club, enjoy it all. Just to remind you PLEASE leave the snooker room as you find it; take glasses and cups back to the bar or restaurant; replace the table covering and leave the door unlocked when you leave, it makes life a lot easier. Please sanitize both at the start and when you leave, for safety – both for you and the next person.
Now, to all our established members who used to play snooker, I would like you to reclaim your cues. If they are hanging up in their cases, please put them on the table with your name on a piece of paper and I will return them back on the wall. All the rest, not claimed, will be opened and removed, so space can be made for anybody who wishes to leave their cues at the club. I will look at this situation again in October.
Hope to meet you all in the coming months.
The Men have tidied the men’s changing room recently – please try to keep the room clean and tidy.
The visitors’ changing rooms need some attention now – Members should not be using this room …… if you have any items in the visitors’ changing room, please ensure they are labelled or disposed of by the first week in September. Any items not labelled will be disposed of. Trousers, Shirts etc. should be taken home and washed!!!!
Thank you for your co-operation.
WELL DONE EVERYONE
£519 was raised at the Bazaar held on Open Day
A big thank you to all the helpers who worked so hard and also to the men led by Rick Long who erected the Gazebos and manhandled all the tables etc.
It was a hugely successful day all round and there was a great buzz about the place.
The Sales Table is now up and running again, if you have any donations please leave in Little Office marked Marion but please NO BOOKS – CDs or ELECTRICALS
Thank you – Marion Branch
Although not “Social” in the absence of a Development Director it fell upon us. I think we can all agree that the open day was a great success.
We had 135 people attend –69 visitors and 66 members who helped make the day a great success.
Marion made a very good profit on the Bazaar, Sam and John both fared well in the bar and restaurant.
In summary – thanks to everyone who took part, coached, donated, bought etc. etc.
7 people joined on the day, 5 people requested further taster sessions, in A further 12 people requested membership forms and 4 of those have since been returned. Well done all of you who took part – we now have at least 11 new members and possibly more to come. If you see a new face in the Club, please make them welcome.
Maggie’s Quiz returned in June, and although run on Covid guidelines 60 people attended and had a very good evening. Congratulations to the winning team, Chris, Neal, Dave Monica Nisha and John.
Special mention to Maggie, who did a tremendous job as usual. Watch out for the next quiz with a twist – date 1st October.
We have had two lunches in the past month, a very popular and tasty event. Both meals superbly undertaken by Sam and her team of helpers.
We had 24 people join us for a great Prosecco afternoon. I am sure you will agree, the standard was excellent, thanks to Sam and helpers.
17 “Beetles” attended our first Drive, which was organised by Jane, Sue, and Rose. A frenetic but most enjoyable afternoon– we shall have another one in the future.
The above events have raised approximately £1400 for the club, plus any profits from the bar. With the members who have already filled in application forms we will be in receipt of at least £1500 in membership money.
We hope you will show your hospitality to all new faces at the Club and welcome all new members in friendship. (As you always do!)
Thanks to those who continue to support the Club in whatever way, without your loyalty the Club could not function as well as it does.
