I would like to take this opportunity of thanking you on behalf of the Management Committee for your patience and support over the past weeks regarding the bar and restaurant situation.  Also to thank those members who have come forward volunteering to cover opening hours in the bar.

The restaurant, with the aid of Luke and Finlay are doing a great job and I’m sure this is appreciated by you all.

The County and visiting teams have been impressed at the food provided and have complimented back to the staff.
Continue enjoying your bowls everyone.

Thank you to all members for your patience whilst we have been restoring our bar and catering facilities. We are not quite fully operational yet but the restaurant is open for business from 9.30 to 2.30 serving a range of refreshments from tea and coffee to a full on “Fat Boy’s” English breakfast!

There are also a range of summer salads, well-filled sandwiches in malted bread, and our new, giant, Croydon Burger!

If you require sandwiches etc. for after club or Surrey games, please order either the day before or first thing in the morning.

The bar service has been running from 12 to 2.30, and will be extended into the evenings as we train up our bar volunteers. It will, of course, be open when there are evening events such as a quiz night.

Team captains, please liaise with the kitchen for the provision of match meals. We have already done a couple of these. The Civil Service said it was the best meal they had been served at Croydon for years, and Old Coulsdon players were very happy with their meal and the efficient service.

Behind the Bar!!

We have been asking for volunteers to help man the bar area.  I am really pleased with the response so far, and I am now organising training sessions with those who responded.

At the moment the bar is scheduled to be open at lunchtime.  We also need it to be open when any events are taking place at the club, i.e. matches, social events, afternoon and evening leagues – providing there is a demand.  We hope to be fully functional very soon, with a full stock.

It is also hoped run more events in the bar area and these are being discussed with the social section at the moment

Line up to shake hands!!!

As you all know Tony Rowland received an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday honours list. Tony went to the Palace this month accompanied by Maggie and his son Steven and daughter-in-law Emma and was presented with his well-deserved honour by HRH Prince Charles.

By all accounts they all had a wonderful, memorable day, rounded off with tea at the Ritz. Unfortunately Andy Murray would not give Tony a free tennis lesson (yes, he did ask!).

Please look on the web site – type in Tony Rowlands MBE – you will find lots of information about Tony and his endeavours for Croydon and the community – Croydon Bowls Club are extremely proud to have Tony and Maggie as members of our Club. Congratulations Tony.

We have made a decent start to the ESL season with 2 wins and a narrow loss by only 1 point to Old Coulsdon.

The RSB midweek boys are going well too! Thanks to Dave Warrington and Luke Griffin who, between them, have taken over the running of the club competitions. Good luck to all in those.

Surrey competitions are just getting under way now, but we have already had a Croydon bowler in an Area Final. Well done to Khan Gause who reached the Area 1 final in the un-badged singles. Unfortunately, as a result of a poor umpiring decision, Gause lost ,-  the club is appealing the decision.  There’s always next year!!

Hope you all have a successful season, and we don’t get rained on too much!

Finlay Morton

Men’s Captain

Congratulations to Luke Griffin on being selected to play in the Surrey under 25’s White Rose “b” team, this being played at Cranleigh B C on Sunday 16th June.

Go along and support if you can.

Open Indoor 2 Wood Competition

It is my intention to run an ‘Open 2 Wood Competition’ next indoor season and would ask all members to keep their eyes peeled for more information which will be made available at a later date. This competition will be well suited to all bowlers with an eye for the jack particularly budding front end bowlers both Ladies and Men’

The Competition Entries again last year showed a small increase and entry fees for all competitions will remain at £2.00 per entry.

It is not my intention to run a ‘Plate Competition’ next indoor season due to the lack of interest shown in playing what some interpret as a losers trophy to which in my thinking is a shame but is a fact that I will not win an argument on.

Hope you are all enjoying your outdoor bowling season, gardens and summer holidays both home and abroad whatever have a lovely time and stay ‘Happy and Healthy’….see you all soon.

Allen Banks

Men’s’ Indoor Competition Secretary

The men’s and mixed club competitions will be drawn on the 31st May

Please see notice board for the draws.

The Tuesday Afternoon Mixed (Fruits) League and the   “Babs Carson” Thursday Evening Mixed League are under way and both leagues have more players than last year.

Perhaps with the new catering and bar arrangements these competitions could become even more “Social Events”.

Once again, Ladies, welcome to the outdoor season.  It’s good to be outside in our lovely oasis with sunshine and fresh air.   The season started with a mixture of rain and sunshine, but that’s what UK summers are often about!

We had an enjoyable friendly at Sutton – until the rains came and the game had to finish early.   On 23 May, we started our Croydon and District Ladies League campaign with a good win against CMO’s, (33-29) this time in the sunshine.  We hope it will continue in that vein.

There is a mixture of Ladies’ C&DL and friendly games during June, as well as mixed matches, and Croydon will be hosting the SCWBA Zone 2, 2 wood day.

Please put your names down on the match sheets and keep an eye on the noticeboards for news about the competitions.

Please support the ladies outdoor committee; we do not have a Captain as such but the committee members will be sharing taking the matches, etc.   We look forward to seeing you on the greens.

Jackie Barlow

Entry forms for the competitions – internal, Croydon and District Ladies and The Ladies of Croydon – can be found on various noticeboards in the ladies’ cloakroom and in the corridor out to the greens.  Please enter by the stated deadlines and also keep an eye on the noticeboards for updates during the season.

The Ladies Drawn Triples is on 23rd June 2019 at 10am the closing date for entries is 10th June 2019.

Are you a summer indoor bowler? There are 37 of us out there but because there is nothing about summer indoor bowling in the fixture book, many of you may not know there is a drive every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, the same as outdoor. They start at 10 o’clock for 2 hours, or longer if you want. Matches and competitions are to be arranged by Paul Baker but we need the support of members to enable these to take place. So if you have paid your membership for the summer don’t miss out, come and join the happy bunch.

The summer indoor crowd

The Friday Bird league teams are re-drawn each year and there is a board on the wall at the ‘ladies end’ of the indoor pavilion. The games start at 10 am and run for the usual 2 hours. At present there are not enough players to enable it to go ahead. We don’t want to lose a ladies league so if you played in it last season and have forgotten to put your name down, or if you would like to join us for the first time next season, either put your name on the list or phone or email me.

Volunteers Wanted!

We need the following volunteers on 23rd June and before (even if you can only spare a couple of hours), please liaise with Alan Hart.

Meet and greet – to act as hosts, promoting all areas of the Club, not just bowls. We want to stress the social life and friendship that can be enjoyed at the club, dances, quizzes, theatre trips etc.

Mentors – we would like to give every newcomer a mentor to encourage and work with them in their initial period with us – just being sociable and friendly and helping people to enjoy their game.

Coaches – we want coaches to be available – for those who want to have a go.

We also need people to be available to give out shoes and bowls. We would like members playing darts, snooker, and bridge – and of course bowls! Indoors and out.

Our Open Day is advertised on the Surrey Bowls website – check it out and “like” on Facebook

If you have any additional suggestions for the day, please let us know. If you have contacts with local advertising please let us know. We always welcome your ideas and comments.

Put the date in your diary now –

23rd June -10.00 am

Sue Lammas has put together the following article – which new and experienced bowlers may find very interesting!!!

The game of Bowls has much to offer, at many different levels. Whatever level you aspire to, the one thing to remember is that we all start out as a ‘New Bowler’.

New Bowlers are always welcome at Croydon, and are offered free taster sessions, where they can receive an introduction to the game by qualified coaches. Once the basics have been learnt, and you and your coach are confident in your ability, you can then take that first step into bowls club life.

First Steps:

As a Member, you can practice (roll-up) or play social bowls with other members. You will also have the opportunity to join some of the many friendly internal leagues, which are an ideal introduction to competitive games. There are organized leagues for both Ladies and Men, and several which are mixed.

The Next Stage: (Friendly Games)

It is hoped that once you gain a little confidence you will want to play more competitively and you will put your name down for a ‘Friendly’. The Club organises Friendly Matches against other clubs in the area, who are also out for an enjoyable game with light refreshments or a meal afterwards.

We play to win, of course, but it’s not the end of the world if we don’t. These friendly matches are played both at home and away, so you get a chance to visit other clubs in the area and play on different greens.

For all the above games the notice boards will display a sheet where you can put your name if you wish to play. At the beginning of each season, you will be given the Club Fixture Book, listing all the matches and venues for that season, allowing you to plan ahead.

Competitive Games and Competitions:

Croydon play in many local leagues, and these matches often have a slightly more competitive feel, although they usually follow the same format as the friendlies, and are just as enjoyable. The Club hold singles, pairs and triples competitions for those who want to take part, and bowlers of all levels are encouraged to participate. Playing against better players is a good way of improving your game and will usually raise your level of play. Competition entry forms will be made available with an entry closing date, and shortly thereafter, the draw will be posted on the notice board.

Members are also encouraged to enter either The Borough of Croydon men’s competitions, or The Ladies of Croydon competitions.

Slightly More Serious Competitive Games / County Competitions and Matches:

Once you are a little more experienced, there is the opportunity for you to be selected to represent Croydon Bowling Club and play in the national club team competitions.

As in our club competitions, but with the addition of fours (also known as rinks), you can also enter county and national competitions which are organised by the respective associations. Entry details for these are made available through the ladies’ and men’s secretaries. Playing in these competitions give bowlers the opportunity to gain their Surrey badge and play for the county.

Every member of Croydon Bowling Club has at one time been a new bowler. We have all taken that first step onto the green and made an attempt to put up a wood.

(We have all at some point, also had a really bad game and wondered why we bothered!)

Whether it is playing a social game with friends or putting on a Surrey shirt and playing for the county, one constant is that ….

Please—if anyone has any comments regarding this publication—or anything else regarding the Club let the relevant people know.

Please also let us know your results for the next time!!!
