Summer
Open Day
!! Bazaar and Bowl !!
27th June 2021
10.00 am – 4.00 pm
We endeavour to recruit more members this month with our own recruitment day.
On SUNDAY 27th JUNE we have a SUMMER OPEN DAY – BAZAAR AND BOWL.
The bar and restaurant will be open and Marion has lots of bargains – bring your relatives and friends and have another fun day out. Weather permitting the Bazaar will be held on the “C” green.
Banners and boards are outside the club, we are featured on three local websites, including our own, advertisements are in local publications and we are having 5,000 updated leaflets distributed throughout the local area. If you can possibly take some of our leaflets, situated on the table in the hallway, we would ask you to display them in local shops etc. Perhaps put one of them in the window of your car. We should be grateful for any volunteers on the day.
Contributions would be much appreciated

President’s Report
Hi everybody I hope you are all keeping well and enjoying this lovely weather. It has certainly been a bonus in these bad times, although it has been a tonic seeing the bowlers on the green and so many of you coming up to socialise in the restaurant and bar. It’s like being “let out of prison “!!!
We are in need of more clerical assistance in the main office. We do have Brenda Rutt but we do need another volunteer. A few hours per week would be so helpful and take a load off of those already doing sterling work. The covid has certainly not helped.
Thanks must go to Rick and his band of men who have made our outdoor greens, furniture, sheds and gazebos top notch. Thank you lads.
We have had so many congratulations regarding our covid safety which has been from those in high places. Thank you all BUT remember we are not out of the woods yet.
Keep smiling ALL, we’ll get there. Cheers.
Daphne
I am very sorry to have to let you know that our dear Fred White died yesterday (4.6.21) morning and Beryl was with him.
A long standing member with a wicked sense of humour, he will be sadly missed.
The funeral will be held at Croydon crematorium on 28th June at 12.45 pm.
R.I.P James Keogh MBE
16.09.1937 – 13.06.2021
Our beloved James Keogh sadly passed away on 13.06.2021
He was a loving brother, uncle, father and grandad and will be missed dearly. He had many hobbies but his favourite past-time was playing bowls and taking part in tournaments.
His funeral will be held at Croydon crematorium on Tuesday 6th July at 13:45.
If you would like to attend, please send me a message on 07528057169.
Lisa Keogh
Bowls Director
I attended a meeting this morning of the Surrey club chairman’s committee. They all sent their good wishes to Peter Duncan and his wife. I have requested Daphne to convey this to Peter.
Some of the club chairmen played at Croydon at the end of May and have asked me to bring the following comments back to the club and members of the board.
“On arrival everyone was made welcome and given information regarding equipment,
changing, bar and catering”.
“The club’s attention to covid and safety of players was the best anyone had seen”.
“Every participant enjoyed the day and felt in NO danger at any point re covid 19”.
Well done to you, all the hard work and your compliance to the regulations has brought the above comments from the County.
WELL DONE CROYDON.
With the continued changes in the governments regulations, we should be congratulating ourselves for being not only open but we are in a position to hold matches and to date at least one county match has taken place. Following the match, I was at the Surrey club chairman’s meeting and received the congratulations from the clubs for the covid safety procedures we had in place and the comment was made we all felt safe at Croydon.
We need to keep our standards high and keep us all safe, always wear a mask when inside the building unless seated at a table for a drink or to eat.
As we start to prepare for the indoor season, we need a member to take up the role of snr. green steward. If any indoor bowler is interested, please contact me. Keep safe and enjoy your bowling.
Paul Baker
Bowls Director
Ladies
Just keeping in touch and hoping that you are enjoying not only the sunshine but the bowling on our superb greens, thanks to Steve.
Another Saturday drive went ahead which was organised by Vernon Nicholas and well supported.
We will be having a committee meeting after the deadline for this month’s newsletter which is going out earlier than usual so I don’t have anything to report to you at this time.
I would however like to mention the bowling bags/cases that are on top of the lockers in our changing room.
Recently I was asked to look for a ladies bowling case – I checked every single bag/case and found that the majority of them don’t have any names to identify the owner which made it very difficult to find the case that I was looking for.
Could I ask you please to put labels/name tags on your cases when you are able? Thank you.
Meanwhile stay safe and keep bowling.

Ladies Outdoor Captain’s Report
Hope you are all enjoying this lovely weather – just right for bowling. Thanks for putting your names down on the match sheets for forthcoming matches – please keep it up as the matches are important to the running of the ladies outdoor section.
We do need two more ladies for the drawn triples on the 27th June, so please contact Chris Uphill our match secretary if you wish to play. We have played one C&D match with CMO’s which was a draw. Our friendly with Sutton was a win by eight points to Croydon. We played the “Top Club” (a National game) against Purley Bury and they won. Thank you for your support and hope to see you on the greens. Many thanks Dave Jackman for getting the Tuesday afternoon fruit league up and running – well done Dave.

Ladies Captain
Summer League(s) 2021
Normally, by now, we would be well into the summer league fixtures but in this abnormal season, we are just starting!
Tuesday Afternoon “Fruits” (now Triples) League
We have 39 players for this league. There will be six teams of 6 or 7 players so we all get 4 or 5 games. The first “fruits” matches are on Tuesday, 22nd June and on the subsequent Tuesdays until the final matches on 24th August, making 10 games overall.
On the 24th, there will be a “Prize-giving” – “Wine and Bits” gathering after the matches, at about 5.00 p.m.
Babs Carson League
Sadly, only 23 people signed up for this league which is not enough to run a normal league system……..
We have had long discussions amongst ourselves about what to do on Thursday evenings instead of the “Babs” formal league. We had a number of options on the table, but we have come down to running an “aggregate” with Tony Rowland taking the reins. He has support from 4 or 5 other participants to deal with the data recording and financial business – a match fee of £1 per session per player should be charged on Thursday evenings starting at 6.15 on 1st July until the nights close in!
I took down the original “Babs” list but am now replacing it for any additional players to show their interest in playing (hoping that all of the original 23 will continue to support this worthy cause!)

Men’s Indoor Section
We had our first indoor committee meeting for many months on 16/6/21 and whilst it was too early to contemplate the internal league structures without knowing the likely membership numbers, to that end Wayne Kavanagh and Luke Griffin will be contacting league captains to see if they intend to run next season.
David Blackburn, our league secretary, has now taken on more work for the club and since the passing of Barry Barrett has nobody to help him, therefore, we are looking for a couple of volunteers to help David collecting and checking the score cards and chasing up league captains to fulfil their fixture. We also now need to get a section secretary as Tim Norvell has decided to stand down. We would take this opportunity to thank Tim for all his work over the years. If anybody would like to volunteer for the jobs mentioned please contact me, Paul Baker or Dave Blackburn.
There is no news yet on county competitions or the Surrey league. Dave Williams is continuing to captain the mixed games and I would like to thank Jane Seymour, who has agreed to help Dave on match days. We have also agreed on match fees, home and away, of £9 per player – the first increase in 5yrs – and members playing representative games like the “Denny” and “over-60s” double rink will pay a match fee of £4 home and away but this will not include food. Where club matches do not include a match meal then the match fee will be adjusted downwards. Please check the match meal listed on the selection sheet, if you have a dietary problem with the meal you must notify the captain of the day at least 3 clear days before the start of the fixture so that the caterer can be advised. Meals cannot be changed if the captain is notified less than 3 days of the start of the fixture.
I was also sad to learn of the passing of a long time club member Fred White. Fred was an old-school character and club member who took league captain responsibilities and made himself available for club matches when he was fit and able, I am sure everyone would like join with me in sending their condolences to Fred’s wife Beryl and the family. We also pass our condolences to James Keogh’s family at this sad time, we remember both gentlemen well.
Bill Hudson,
Indoor Captain
IMPORTANT NOTICE
WOULD ALL MEMBERS WHO PUT THEIR NAMES DOWN TO PLAY IN THE WEDNESDAY MORNING MIXED TRIPLES LEAGUE – PLEASE DO SO AGAIN.
The original sheet was inadvertently scrapped in a clean-up in the bowling hall. Many thanks.

Greens Director’s Report
Now that most of the work round the outdoor greens, Corbett shelter, fox fence, all the gazebos repaired and painted, new doors to rear car park and main doors to rear car park varnished;
All members should be responsible for the following:
- Rear car park last car out – regardless of time – ensure the gates are closed.
- The doors from the car park to the green – are not self-closing – please ensure the gates are closed behind you both on entering and leaving.
- Shed on B green – Please ensure the doors are closed if the green is empty.
- Doors to Corbett Shelter. These need to be closed when greens are empty.
The work carried out is for your benefit. Please look after your club.
Rick Long
Greens Director
Editor’s note: Rick and his volunteers have done a great deal of work in and around the club over the last six months – It is soul destroying when some members do not comply with simple housekeeping to keep our club in safe and working order. Please follow these simple requests. Many thanks!
National Open Day / Kim Brown Charity Event
Our “National Open Day” combined with our charity “Kim Brown Day” on 31st May was a great success considering the amount of time we had to prepare for it! As you can see from the photos, it was a glorious day and fun was had by everyone.
We had a tremendous response to the raffle held in aid of The Royal Marsden. Thanks to those of you who bought tickets donated prizes, and took part, we were able to donate over £200 to this cause which touches many of our hearts. Thanks also go to our caterer, helpers and coaches.
The recruitment day, which was a National event saw several “hopefuls” have a go at bowling, it is anticipated that at least three members will join. If you do see these souls wandering around, please say “hello” and make them welcome.

IT’S 2022 SO LET’S GO!!
We have been in lockdown far too long. So now is the time to have something to look forward to starting with a spectacular night out! What a way to start 2022!
I have been able to obtain a limited number of top tickets for the award winning musical (3 “Olivier” and 6 “What’s on Stage” awards) “& Juliet.” This all singing all dancing musical with amazing costumes will blow you away! With many great songs including “Baby One More Time,” “Young Hearts Run Free”, “Since U Been Gone,” “One More Try.” Loosely based on “Romeo & Juliet” it has all the ingredients of what life is all about.
Showing at the Shaftesbury Theatre, 210, Shaftesbury Avenue, London WC2H 8DP on Wednesday 12th January 2022. We leave the club at 5.15pm in good time for the 7.30pm performance. The nearest main line station is Charing Cross and the nearest underground station is Tottenham Court Road. If you miss the coach your tickets will be left at the box office. We have a group booking that means that our top seats will cost £ 56 for members and £ 70 for non-members which includes transport from the club to the theatre and back. On receiving this form please complete it and return it to John Hilton with your cheque.
I look forward to seeing you on another great night out.
