I first met Tina in Spain when we were holidaying with our respective Sisters. She was nearing retirement and was apprehensive at the thought and how she would fill her days. Needless to say I mentioned Bowls, and that Croydon Bowls Club offered the sport plus a wide Social side with a bar and restaurant. On her retirement she and Doug took up the idea and joined us.
Duck to water comes to mind and she very soon became absorbed with the sport. Being Tina more than the sport, she wanted to be involved and soon became a member of the Social Committee and was an asset to be sure.

Her next move was to take up the League Secretary position on the Ladies Indoor Section, in head first and yet another success. Organising was one of her loves and that was how she tackled this commitment. Full on.

Paul and Angela Lean did the trip to Bembridge but wished to retire. Oh dear who will take on this task? Guess……you are right Tina and Doug and once again with her organised mind made a huge success once again. Bravo.

Always working with figures she then took on the vacancy in the Main Office for a bookkeeper assisting the Treasurer. Just the job she said and settled in very quickly. THEN…..no Treasurer!! Need we have worried, no, not when we had Tina BUT she handled the pressure very well for a good many months as we had no volunteers to take the Treasurers vacancy. When she became poorly she still soldiered on with true grit and then Covid came upon us and lockdown slowed the pace.

Tina, what can I say, on behalf of all Members you will be sadly missed and cannot thank you enough for all the hard work you have put into the running of the Club and the support you have given to the Board.

Sleep soundly Tina from all of us, we’ll meet again I’m sure.

Ladies,

I would like a moment to pause and pay tribute to Tina Welsh who sadly died on March 12th after a long battle with Cancer. Tina was a lovely lady who was a loyal friend, a very good bowler and did such valuable work on the club’s finances for many years and was the Indoor Ladies League Secretary.
She will be greatly missed and our sincere sympathies go to Doug and her family. R.I.P Tina.

I hope that everyone by now has had at least the 1st vaccination with the hopes of the 2nd one soon.
The Club is working towards opening for Outdoor Bowling on the 12th April and I for one look forward to some regular exercise but also the contact with ‘people’- all my Bowling friends. Some of us may not have bowled for nearly a year so it will find it hard to begin with as we build up our strength.

It is unbelievable that it is a year today as I write this that the Prime Minister was warning us of a National Lockdown to start on March 23rd 2020!

It has been a ghastly experience which has changed our lives but we must move forward, pick up our lives, live with it and take extreme care at all times.

I look forward to seeing you all and meeting you on the Green.

Editor’s Note

The following letter has been sent to all FULL and outdoor only  members. Hopefully you have all received it!

16th March 2021

The Board of Directors have great pleasure in welcoming you back to our Club. We anticipate opening the outdoor greens subject to Government guidelines, on 12th April 2021. For further details please contact Paul Baker and look out for updates in the newsletter.

The past year has been a difficult one, but we hope you will return to the new season eager to meet up with your friends and get ready to start bowling again.

Renewal of Membership

We have a lot planned for this, year; leagues, competitions; special events; social activities; dinners; lunches and much more. We hope to make up for lost time with a broad range of competitions and activities for you.

It has been decided not to increase membership fees this year, for obvious reasons, but we do need your support to ensure all planned activities can go ahead. We hope to be completely back to normal by 22nd June.

For those of you who have continued to support us as fully paid up members during this difficult time we are offering a reduction off of this year’s fees. It is our way of rewarding you for your loyalty. Fees are being calculated at the moment and will be shown on your invoice.

Social Club

Please also take a look at the events planned for this year – we are sure you will find something to entertain you!  Full membership entitles you to special rates for these events or excursions. Don’t forget your non-bowling friends can join as a social member ….at under £1 per week this has got to be a bargain.

AGM

As soon as we return to normality we shall be holding our AGM – please consider how you can assist your Club…again look out for bulletins in the newsletter.

– get back to your sport and remain fit and healthy.

We are all looking forward to seeing you once again.

Yours sincerely
The Board of Directors
Croydon Bowling & Sports Club

Bowls Director’s Report

Bowls Committee: The committee met to look at how we can get back to bowling during the early part of the season. At the moment the Government have not announced the Regulations or Guidelines that will apply to us re opening.

Rick Long (Greens Director) has advised us that on 12th April green B will open for two weeks after which we can expect greens A & B to be in use. Jean Hunter has agreed to take bookings. We expect to be allowed to follow the rule of 6 which means in practical terms triples will be allowed on alternate rinks.

In order to do this we are asking for your support on Saturday and possible Sunday 10th and 11th of April to help move tables and chairs etc. from the outdoor storage areas. This will enable the repair of the shed roof and the replacement windows to be fitted.  Please let me or Rick Long know if you are able to help. We meet at 10.00 a.m. and more hands make light work.

Jane Seymour has offered to run a two wood pairs competition and Vernon Nicholas has kindly offered to run a Saturday afternoon Aggregate. Lists will be available for you to sign up for these and we trust other comps when we open on 12th April.

As soon as I am able to advise you as to the conditions and guidelines laid down by the Government I will do so. They are expected to be published on 29th March and come into force on 1st April.

At this time we expect the club buildings to remain closed, so please use the rear carpark.

The committee will be meeting again on 6th of April when it is hoped we will be able to update you all as to the conditions that will be in place for the reopening of Bowls Clubs.

Now is the time to start on the road back to fitness for us all it will be good to meet up again.

Do watch out for information on Face Book and our Web site. Our Bowls Development Director Tony Goucher will be keeping you up to date using these media’s.

Looking forward to meeting you all again soon

Bowls Director

Greens’ Report

Dave and I have replaced the rotten post on the back gates. We have also installed a new lock. The same code as the electric gates. You can only open the gates from the outside.
If you come in this way, leave the padlock attached to the bolt.
Last car out locks the gates from the outside please.

Rick Long
Green’s Director

Ladies Outdoor Season

Hope you are all keeping well and looking forward to the warmer weather.  We were hoping to organise a pre-season meeting in April but due to Government guidelines this is not possible, so our meeting is postponed.  All being well, we have some exciting bowling to look forward to starting in May, so please be sure to pay your subscriptions as soon as possible so you can join in the fun.   Please see competition forms in the newsletter.  We would like as many ladies as possible to enter the competitions, so please give your support to the club.

Pat Bentley
Ladies Outdoor Captain.

SEE LADIES OUTDOOR COMPETITION ENTRY FORM ON FOLLOWING PAGE

Men’s Indoor Section.

There is really little to report at the moment. Peter Duncan our Match Secretary has arranged a large number of matches for the 21/22 season and is working to add additional fixtures to the list.

As regards to National Competitions see Allen Banks article.

In the not too distant future Wayne and Luke will be contacting internal league Captains to check their team plan for the season but, of course, a lot depends on the number of members that re-join the club.

On Friday 19/3/21, I and the other 3 Captains will participate in a zoom call hosted by Paul Baker, Director of Bowls who will advise us on the Board’s current position and views on the resumption of bowls,  until then there is little else to report

Stay safe and stay well and stick to the rules and hope to see all soon.

Bar and Catering Report

Under the government’s current guidelines it is suggested that the club bar and restaurant facilities can open to serve outside only by table service, this no earlier than 12th April, I do not think from our bar and catering perspective that this will be practical or financially viable.

The next phase of the government’s current guidelines for bar and catering currently state that we can serve people indoors via table service for up to 6 people or members of two households from the earliest 17th May. This is currently what we are aiming at. The government then state that currently all restrictions may be lifted no earlier than 22nd of June,

Of course all of the above info is dependent on new comprehensive guidelines being made available. Sam and Norman are both keen to welcome you all back.

Hopefully after 22nd of June we will be open up our facilities to members, for events such as Birthdays, weddings, Meetings, please contact myself if you would like to avail yourself of these facilities. Until further notice we will still be adopting a cashless payment system.

As you can see we will be trying to run a limited program in the club from 17th of May and a full program from the 22nd of June. Are any of you interested in Volunteering for bar work?

KEEP SAFE

We have received the following “thankyou” letters from the two charities who benefitted from your Christmas messages appeal:

2nd March 2021

Dear Members of Croydon Bowls Club,

Re.: Donation to the Garwood Foundation

First of all, please apologise our late thank-you note. I have not been into work and the information of your lovely donation had not reached me.

Yes, t still can remember how welcome you made me feel when I came back in 2019, when the world seemed to be alright. How much has it all changed. I hope that all members and their families and friends have been able to stay well during this time. Let’s hope it all goes back to some form of normality soon.

Your kind donation is of course most welcome. Thank you very much. Every penny will be used to make the life of our disabled pupils and adults better. A big thank-you also from our trustees, staff, the families and carers of our clients.

As we cannot welcome any visitors now and even in the near future, we are in the process to make a virtual tour. When this is uploaded to our websites, it would give you a little bit of insight into what you are so generously supporting.

Kind regards,

Karin Schnabel

——————————————————

To all at Croydon Bowling Club,

I hope this email finds you well.

My name is Rebecca and I am your local Community Fundraiser at Alzheimer’s Society. I saw that you recently made a donation for £112 and I wanted to get in touch to say a huge thank you for your support, we are truly grateful.

At times like this, our support for people affected by dementia has been more important than ever. The pandemic meant that we have had to suspend our face-to-face services, but Dementia Connect frontline staff quickly adapted to deliver support virtually and over the phone. A network of 600+ Dementia Advisers have supported grieving families, escalated safeguarding issues hidden behind closed doors and helped people to cope day-by-day. We also established a brand-new service – Companion Calls. This volunteer-led service was designed to combat loneliness and, as of January 2021, 50,000 Companion Calls had been made to over 3,000 people feeling the effects of loneliness. Your incredible support enables us to be there for these people.

Our vital services have been a lifeline to people during the pandemic but, even now, as restrictions continue to change and the coronavirus vaccine is rolled out, people affected by dementia are having to face up to the long-lasting effects of the coronavirus pandemic. As we navigate this ‘new normal’, Alzheimer’s Society will be here offering our services, funding ground-breaking research and campaigning for change. None of this is possible without you. We cannot thank you enough for uniting against dementia.

It would be lovely to hear back from you about what you did to raise this money or the occasion that encouraged you to donate. Likewise, if there is anything further you need from us or any questions you have, please do get in touch as I would be delighted to help.

Thank you so much once again for choosing to support Alzheimer’s Society.

Best wishes,

Rebecca

WE ARE ALL BOOKED TO GO! IN SEPTEMBER 2021

Warner’s Holme Lacy House Hotel

As we are starting to come out of lockdown getting a holiday booked up in this country is not only becoming more difficult but more expensive. It is not surprising that a lot of UK citizens are looking to have a staycation in what will be left of 2021 when many other countries in Europe are still trying to come to terms with getting their vaccination programme running smoothly.

If you have booked to go on the Croydon Bowling Club Tour you have no such problems. We will be staying at Warner’s Holme Lacy House Hotel just south of the ancient city of Hereford from 8th-13th September. You will have the chance to visit Ross-on-Wye, Ludlow, Ledbury, Eastnor Castle and the city of Hereford. Some of you will also be bowling at some of the bowling clubs in these locations. If you are not bowling and don’t want to travel you can just enjoy the gardens and grounds of Holme Lacy House or the in-house facilities that are provided by Warner’s.

So everything is in place and I will be sending out requests for the final payment at the end of July. In the meantime if you have any questions concerning the tour please email or ring me.
