Newsletter – November 2020

To all members.

Following the government’s new Tier 2 regulations it is not clear as to the position regarding indoor bowling clubs. We are expecting a clearer statement on guidance from the EIBA on Monday 30th November. However at the moment, the Board have agreed to open the club on Wednesday 2nd December for single persons per rink or unless in a bubble, from the same household. (If this changes we will inform members asap). If you wish to play, rinks must be booked with Daphne, as previously.

As things stand at the moment the restaurant will be open but the bar will only be available for booked social functions.( 4th, 6th, 11th, 13th, 14th and 15th December).

Wishing you a safe and enjoyable Christmas and hopefully a return to club competitions.

President's Report

Hi everybody, it’s Newsletter time but unfortunately there is not a lot to say as we have not had any bulletins through from the powers above as to how we can proceed bowling at the Club after the 2nd December.  Rest assured, as soon as we have any news it will be sent to you ASAP in the usual way, either by email, Website, Facebook or letter.   I am sure we are all champing at the bit to getting back together again.

I send you my very best wishes to keep safe and being positive for our future.

Daphne

Editor’s Notes

During the “lockdown” our volunteers and officers have been extremely busy in the background. It is sometimes a thankless job keeping everything together, but we have a number of people who work tirelessly for your benefit and have kept the fabric of the Club together.

Barry Swannie, in particular has spent a great deal of time planning our financial strategy and budgets for next year whilst also ensuring that the accounts are up to date for this financial period. This has saved the Club a considerable amount of money in accountancy fees and has been crucial this year with the lack of income the Club has sustained.

You have all been kept up to date, by email and letters, thanks to the work of Daphne and also Dave who has diligently attended the office to deal with queries and letters and see to the general administration. You do not always see the work that these volunteers do – but it is essential for the running and upkeep of your Club.

Norman has also been a regular visitor during lockdown, making sure the overflow in the bar is emptied and the pipes etc. are kept in working order and clean.

Maintenance still has to go on – and as you are aware the Club, like its members is not getting any younger! Rick has been checking all around the Club for signs of wear and tear – we have had some problems with a leaking roof, which will have to be addressed. There have also been a number of other necessary tasks which Rick has undertaken.

You may also be aware that we have changed our cleaning company, we had a few ongoing issues but have now found, we hope, a better (and cheaper) service. All negotiations and work has been going on whilst we have been in lockdown.

A big thank you to all the volunteers.

Another big thankyou goes to all of you who have stayed loyal to the Club, you won’t be disappointed with all the events we have planned for next year. We were just getting on our feet again after the first lockdown and are now back to square one – but that hasn’t’ dampened our spirits and hopefully hasn’t dampened yours – we are all looking forward to a much better 2021 and lots of exciting events and competitions to make up for lost time.

Ladies

What another blow it was to return to a 4 week Lockdown on Thursday 5th November, having been in Tier 2 for some time which made it safe for us to Bowl, albeit restricted and to use the Bar and Restaurant.

But, we have been assured by Boris that the current lockdown finishes on Wednesday 2nd December when we live in ‘hopes’ that we may have a few weeks before Xmas to return to a little bit of our new ‘normality’- Bowling, Bar and Restaurant. Watch this space.

Meanwhile if we are able to have restricted Bowling can I ask you to think about Bowling on Friday Mornings and any of the afternoons when it is very quiet. The early morning sessions at the beginning of the week in particular get booked up.

As and when the restrictions are relaxed and we are able to return to more normal times, Jane  Seymour and I will organise a Mixed Drive on Friday mornings – the one and only one we were able to have before lockdown was very successful with 22 of us bowling.

Meanwhile – stay safe and remember – Hands-Face-Space.

LADIES COMPETITIONS 2020

Despite best intentions, I am sorry to say that the decision has now been taken to cancel all the outstanding ladies competition matches. I had hoped that we would be able to complete our competitions, but the continued restrictions now make this impossible.

When the Ladies Indoor Committee are able to meet again, we will make a decision on the allocation of the prize money.

Ladies Competition Secretary

Gentlemen

Nothing really to report from me, at the moment except to wish all our members a healthy and happy

Christmas and a covid free 2021.

Social Section

We have a number of events planned for December and the New Year – if we are allowed – nothing has been cancelled – just postponed – we are very optimistic!!

Tea and Prosecco will be held on 4th and 11th December as planned (contact Alan 0777 2022 156). A “welcome back” Sunday dinner is planned for 6th December (spaces available) – Christmas dinners have    been      re-scheduled     for                 13th       (lunch),                14th        and        15th (contact Alan).

Wonderful memories of days gone by

We were recently contacted by Debbie and Nick Bray who, when clearing their uncle, Peter Kinnaird’s House, found a scrap book put together by John Curson. John and Peter were doubles partners for a number of years, and obviously very good friends. Not wishing to throw away this interesting history, they asked if Croydon would like the book and have donated the book to us.

John Curson was an EIBA International, and EIBA outdoor international trialist, a Middleton and Liberty Cup Winner. The book details many competitions and awards given to John who was invited to join the Club in 1949. There is a letter congratulating him on winning the club singles in 1951/2 telling him he could buy a gift to the value of £5.00! (I wonder what he bought).  …………………….. Incredible the prize hasn’t changed……)

The book contains many newspaper cuttings and articles, including one report from 1954 congratulating John, Vic Oliver and A. Walter from Croydon who were selected to play for England that year.

We have been informed that John’s portrait hangs in the snooker room and that his ashes were buried in what was the “D” green (now the carpark).

If anyone wants to have a look at this fragile tome – please get in touch with Alan or Yvonne.

A very interesting read and once again thanks to Debbie and Nick for contacting us.

Croydon Bowling Club Charity Christmas Messages

As you all know, in normal times, the social club host a carol concert in aid of a   (local) charity – i.e. the social section provide the sherry and mince pies and the    YOU provide the voices. Obviously this year it will not be  possible.

Last year we also had the initiative of a “Christmas Card Tree” where members could write messages on a parcel tag and donate a small amount to charity. We are asking that this year we do something a little different……..

If you would like your Christmas wishes to be sent to other members of the Club we can accept your wishes and they will be published in the December issue of the newsletter for a donation to charity.

Cheques or Direct Payments can be made to Croydon Bowling & Sports Club Ltd. they can be posted in the Club’s letterbox or sent to Yvonne Russell –- 30 Mallard Road, CR2 8PY. Please print “Charity Christmas donation” on the reverse.
